Bios/Application
[Warning: spoilers.]
Name: Katniss Everdeen
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Cannon point: within book 2/ Catching Fire
Katniss Everdeen is a resident of district 12, the poorest of districts domineered by an oppressive regime in the nation of Panem. The political structure is headed by the tyrannical President Snow, its center and ruling city is The Capital. In The Capital, the wealthy reside in luxury, spending idle and carefree days pursuing extreme fashion trends, or eating until they throw up - to make room to eat more.
In the 12 districts, citizens starve. The Capitol holds total control over these colonies, enforcing its rule through its army of Peacekeepers, capitol punishment carried out over small offenses, and propaganda. Annually, The Hunger Games are held, as a warning and punishment for rebellion that took place in the now annihilated district 13. The Hunger games is a survival of the fittest death match, where a boy and girl from each district between the ages of 12-18 are selected. Participants must kill each other, the last standing is the victor.
Katniss has a strong, straightforward, and what some might call abrasive personality. She may come off as stoic or emotionally withdrawn, this is not the result of an unkind nature - but an emotional shield. At the age of 11, she was forced to take over care of her young sister and mother, after her mother became emotionally unstable as a result of the violent death of her father. Always on the brink of starvation, Katniss secured food by using skills her father taught her to hunt. As she is strongly independent, and rather withdrawn, her resulting social skills are sub par. There was simply not the time to focus on people skills when she was struggling to keep her family alive. As a result she can easily miss or misconstrue social cues, and her social etiquette bears resemblance to a slap in the face. She is a no-nonsense survivalist first, however at her core is an altruistic nature.
Katniss is a skilled archer, one may say supernaturally so. Tough and resilient, she also has an affinity for snares and traps, and the stealth of a seasoned hunter.
At 16, Katniss took the place of her younger sister in The Hunger Games. Against the odds, Katniss not only survives the Hunger games but also saved Peeta, the boy selected from her district. This marked the first Hunger Game that saw two survivors. While traditionally, victors of the Hunger Games live on in the Victor's Village, secure in a newfound fame and wealth - Katniss showed acts of defiance against the Capitol in The Game. This made her a target for reprimand from president Snow. These acts also made Katniss the symbol, and ignition, for a rebellion. Referred to as the "Mockingjay" because of a small pin she wore during the Games, she has come to represent the fight of the people against their oppressors.
Now, Katniss has learned that as a punishment for her defiance, the next Hunger Games will consist of previous winners. Already emotionally shaken by the atrocities she saw - and was forced to commit, Katniss prepares to enter the Arena a second time. While she has gained skills from her first Game, a part of her victory was coincidence, trickery and luck. Facing almost certain death for a second time, Katniss still retains her will to survive - but to her detriment, the instinct to protect as well.
